
If your action is just not going to get any lower and you have a bolt on neck then using a shim is an easy way to do a “neck reset”. You could try a business card or a guitar pick, but I don’t advise it. You need the neck to be flush with the body to deliver all the tonal goodness there is to offer.
I’ve made plenty of them carving them down from a wood blank. It’s not hard but it’s time and labor consuming. Until recently the only real options were shims from Stew Mac but now there are some affordable plastic options as well.
So in the video I show the install of the plastic shims on a Les Paul Jr. The Jr has a tailpiece/bridge that only goes so low; perfect opportunity to try out the shims. Spoiler: They work fine!
